Understanding Asbestos: What is it? What types are there?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring material that was once mined in Australia and prized for its exceptional performance in insulation and fire protection. However, for decades now, it has been recognised as a serious threat to public health, responsible for chronic and even fatal health conditions in those who have been exposed to it. Asbestos, as a known carcinogen with no safe level of exposure, can be extremely dangerous if disturbed – and difficult to detect.
Government agencies report that approximately one in three Australian homes contain asbestos in some form.
Asbestos-containing materials fall into two broad categories: non-friable and friable.
Non-Friable Asbestos
‘Non-Friable’ (meaning solid or rigid) refers to the material containing asbestos that is not able to be easily crumbled, and is less likely to release measurable levels of asbestos fibre into the airborne environment if it is left undisturbed. They’re often considered to be lower risk than their friable counterparts, but are still considered to be dangerous.
Non-friable asbestos can be found in both residential and commercial properties, but is particularly common in homes.
The GBAR Group undertakes the removal of non-friable materials, including:
- super six roof sheeting
- asbestos fencing
- asbestos fibre cement wall sheeting, ceilings, and soffits
- vinyl floor tiles
- asbestos water pipes, gutters and downpipes
- asbestos backing sheets in electrical distribution boards
- asbestos-containing window putty and caulking
- contaminated soil.
Friable Asbestos
‘Friable’ (meaning soft or crumbly) is used to refer to asbestos-containing materials in a powder form, or that can be crumbled, pulverised, or reduced to powder by hand, when dry. These materials are more likely to release measurable levels of asbestos into the airborne environment when disturbed, and generally are considered to be a greater risk to health.
It’s extremely common in commercial buildings, and is often found as a fire retardant in industrial plant rooms, around stoves and burners, or even sprayed onto ceilings and structural beams.
The GBAR Group undertakes the removal and remediation of friable materials including:
- low-density board wall and ceiling linings
- vinyl floor sheeting
- pipe lagging
- roof insulation (Mr Fluffy)
- contaminated soils
- fire-damaged asbestos wall and roof sheeting
- asbestos dust and debris
- fire retardant products.
