This was a sensitive and complex manual demolition project completed without disruption to the daily operations conducted within BlueScope. The demolition area was classified as legionnaire affected, and works were conducted with appropriate procedures and personal protective equipment in place. The cooling tower had a fully operational water reservoir below it which was being used for the cooling towers on both sides. The reservoir tank was protected with timber formwork prior to commencing demolition.
Manual demolition work was conducted by the GBAR Group using 55 tonne slew cranes with man baskets and an additional crane for lifting when required. Structural supports and propping were progressively installed during the demolition eliminating the risk of structural collapse. All timber waste was classified, transported, and disposed of as hazardous materials. The project was completed as per program, on time with no lost time injuries or near misses.
At the centre of the demolition efforts was a cooling tower, which housed an active water reservoir below it. This reservoir was essential for the cooling towers on both sides, emphasising the importance of executing the demolition carefully to avoid any disruption to the cooling system. Before commencing work, the reservoir tank was protected with timber formwork to prevent potential damage.
The GBAR Group managed and executed the demolition, utilising advanced equipment, including 55-tonne slew cranes equipped with man baskets. An additional crane was on standby to assist with lifting tasks when required. The team committed to safety and structural integrity throughout the demolition process. Structural supports and propping were progressively installed as the demolition advanced, eliminating the risk of structural collapse. This thorough approach ensured that all remaining structures remained stable and safe, allowing for a controlled and efficient demolition process.
Another critical aspect of the project was the management of waste. All timber waste generated during the demolition was classified as hazardous due to potential contamination. The team took every precaution to ensure that this waste was transported and disposed of in compliance with environmental regulations. This thorough approach protected the environment and adhered to the best practices for waste management in hazardous environments.
The project was executed with a strong emphasis on safety, resulting in a flawless record: no lost-time injuries or near-miss incidents were reported throughout the operation. The careful planning and execution by the GBAR Group ensured that the project was completed on schedule, reflecting the team’s dedication to professionalism and operational excellence.
The manual demolition project at BlueScope Cooling Tower showcased a successful collaboration between safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. The careful consideration given to the operational environment, combined with the use of advanced equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols, resulted in a project that met its objectives and set a benchmark for future operations in sensitive environments. The dedication to maintaining safety and minimising disruption throughout the demolition process highlights the commitment of all involved to uphold the highest standards in the industry.
This project is a successful example of the effectiveness of thorough planning, execution, and management in navigating complex demolition challenges while safeguarding personnel and the environment.
